Calcium and vitamin D are essential for building strong, dense bones when you're young and keeping them strong and healthy as you age.
The body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends that women 50 and under get 1,000 mg of calcium daily from all sources and women 51 and older get 1,200 mg. For men, it recommends 1,000 mg of calcium per day for ages 70 and under and 1,200 mg for men 71 and older. Calcium can be taken through food and supplements.
