Docusate sodium is a stool softener that is often used when straining to have a bowel movement should be avoided, as it increases the amount of water the stool absorbs in the gut, making the stool softer and easier to pass. This stool softener may also be used to help decrease constipation, to treat irritation of the rectum, to prevent diarrhea, or to treat a medical condition called megacolon.
